Phosphates are plant food, and algae is a plant. They get into your pool from fill water, fertilizer blown off the yard, leaves and even some chemicals. High phosphate levels do not harm swimmers, but they make algae much harder to control and can eat through your chlorine.
The fix is testing, a phosphate remover when levels climb, and keeping organic debris out of the pool. It is one of the things we watch on our weekly routes.
